Trump to Address Press After Ordering Removal of Homeless from Washington, D.C.

President Donald Trump will be speaking to the press today following his divisive directive to remove homeless individuals from Washington, D.C., as part of what he calls a “bold plan” to drive back violent crime and restore the capital’s “cleanliness and grandeur.”

Homeless Relocation Plan

In a Saturday post on Truth Social, Trump directed homeless inhabitants to “move out IMMEDIATELY,” assuring that additional housing would be provided “FAR from the Capital.” The directive constitutes an aggressive push for relocation, and local officials and human rights organizations strongly condemned it.

Crime and Cleanliness Campaign

The president promises the afternoon press briefing will outline plans to combat violent crime while highlighting efforts to bring physical energy to the city. Trump’s communications have equated curbing crime with beautifying the city and improving its infrastructure.

Massive Federal Law Enforcement Deployment

Federal presence in the District has grown, with hundreds of Secret Service, DEA, FBI, and even Amtrak police officers on patrol. The FBI has dedicated approximately 120 agents to evening patrols for street-level enforcement.

National Guard on the Table

The use of the D.C. National Guard is reportedly under deliberation by Trump, who would not require local approval, as the National Guard that is headquartered in the District, unlike state-based Guard units, is under federal command. No decision has been made.

Mayor Pushes Back

D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser takes issue with Trump’s description of the city as a crime hotbed, citing a 26% decrease in violent crime this year, the lowest level in three decades, and a 7% reduction in total crime. Bowser emphasized that the city is already collaborating extensively with federal agencies and insisted there was “no emergency” for such actions.

What’s at Stake

Trump’s move fuels tensions between the national and local governments, raising questions about D.C.’s autonomy and how homelessness, crime, and city revitalization need to be addressed.
