A powerful explosion near Delhi’s historic Red Fort on Monday afternoon has left at least 10 people dead and several others injured, sparking fears of a possible terror attack in the heart of India’s capital.
According to police sources, the blast occurred around 2:45 p.m. near the Lahori Gate parking area, a zone usually crowded with tourists and local visitors. Eyewitnesses reported hearing a massive explosion followed by a fire that engulfed several vehicles in the vicinity.
Emergency services rushed to the scene as thick smoke filled the area. Firefighters battled the blaze while rescue teams worked to evacuate the injured. Nearby hospitals have been placed on high alert, and additional medical staff have been mobilized to handle the influx of victims.
A senior Delhi Police officer confirmed that preliminary investigations point to a car bomb. “We have recovered fragments suggesting the use of an improvised explosive device (IED). Forensic teams are analyzing the debris to identify the explosive material used,” the official said.
Security has been tightened across central Delhi, and key landmarks including India Gate, Parliament House, and Connaught Place have been placed under heavy surveillance. The National Security Guard (NSG) and the National Investigation Agency (NIA) have joined the probe.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed deep sorrow over the incident and extended condolences to the families of the victims. He has directed the Home Ministry to ensure a swift and thorough investigation.
No group has yet claimed responsibility for the blast. However, intelligence agencies are examining possible links to recent threats issued by extremist organizations.
The Red Fort, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, has long been a symbol of India’s independence and pride. The attack near such a significant landmark has once again raised concerns about security preparedness in high-profile public areas.
