Miracle on Mount Everest: Missing Sherpa Found Alive After One Week

Kathmandu, June 4, 2026 — In what climbers are calling a “miracle in the death zone,” a Sherpa guide who went missing on Mount Everest has been found alive after surviving nearly one week in extreme high-altitude conditions.

The Sherpa, whose identity has not yet been officially released, was reported missing during a routine expedition rotation above Camp III on Mount Everest after separating from his team amid sudden weather deterioration and whiteout conditions.

Search and rescue teams, including fellow Sherpa guides and high-altitude climbers from multiple expeditions, immediately launched an intensive operation despite dangerously low temperatures and limited visibility. For days, hopes of finding him alive were fading as temperatures plunged and oxygen levels remained critically low in the “death zone” above 8,000 meters.

Against all odds, he was discovered alive near a sheltered ice formation along a less-traveled ridge route. Rescue teams reported that he was severely dehydrated, frostbitten, and exhausted but conscious when found. He was immediately provided supplemental oxygen and carefully assisted down to a lower camp for stabilization before being evacuated further for medical treatment.

Experts say survival for such an extended period at that altitude is extremely rare. Above 8,000 meters, known as the death zone, the human body cannot acclimatize, and prolonged exposure typically leads to rapid deterioration.

Local expedition organizers praised the coordinated effort of Sherpa rescuers and climbers from multiple teams, calling the rescue a powerful reminder of the skill, resilience, and solidarity within the Himalayan climbing community.

“He is incredibly lucky to be alive. Every hour in those conditions matters,” one expedition leader said.

The Sherpa is now receiving treatment in Kathmandu, where doctors are monitoring his recovery. Officials say further details about the incident will be released after a full investigation into the circumstances of his disappearance.

The incident has once again highlighted both the dangers of high-altitude mountaineering and the critical role Sherpa climbers play in supporting expeditions on the world’s highest peak.
